Heavy Mile

I abandoned myself
unaware
the shadow’s stealth smile
had followed me all the way
through one little mile

Resolving to hold
crowded space inside
though it ate away
straight through the clarity
tucked away in my mind
I abandoned myself to walk a heavy mile

and once I reached the end
resolution, despite releasing confusion
stubbornly refused
to ease me of my burdens

I abandoned myself
too scared to question
each carefully concealed
crack and hole
of that heavy mile
fearing all the roads behind
had somehow
made this knowing heart blind

Who knew weight could suffocate
from underneath?
